Well, Marta is off to Malawi in July and will be back in August. She is spending four weeks out there working on a community project.
The Art Project: What will Martha be doing? In the mornings Martha will be teaching in one of two orphanages, Chilumbo and Monkey Bay. There she will assist the caretakers in teaching children aged 2- 5yrs old. The aim here is to have as much fun with the kids as she can whilst teaching them English, numbers, days of the week etc. She will also assist in serving much needed porridge to the children and on a weekly basis check the children’s BMI to ensure none are too malnutrition. This is a very rewarding project to be involved in. In the afternoons she will be going to the local schools to teach art and crafts with older children. She will bring crafts materials to the orphanage that are, of course, welcomed. Some of these have been donated by Lichfield Dolphins. Martha can make of this project what she would like; it is limited only by her imagination. She can bring paper and chalk and draw with the children, teach origami, or even do some jewellery making with the children. MVO is a non-profit organisation so this means our money goes towards funding all our projects and food for the orphanage etc, so these costs will not be covered by MVO. It is encouraged that you bring these material with you, many materials can be brought very cheaply here in the UK. Martha will also be painting classrooms, orphanages, and hospitals, though again this is not limited, if Martha feels there is anywhere else we can improve with our artistic skills then speak up! MVO's aim is to improve the living, educational and medical environments for the local Malawians. About Martha's trip - from the horse's mouth! "I will be going for about a month (four weeks) in the middle of July until mid August. Although I have signed up to do the art project, I have been told I will be able to get involved in the teaching and sports projects while I am out there. I am funding myself to go out there but would like to do some fundraising for the extra things that we have been asked to take. We have been asked to take out art equipment as well as other toys and other bits and bobs that the children out there won’t have access to. I am looking to fundraise up to £500 for these extra bits, so would appreciate any help you can give me with this total. If I am able to I will do a blog while I am out there so I can update everyone back home on what I am up to, and of course I will take lots of pictures so will be able to present them when I am back." |
